Folk Songs Rock!

Folk songs rock! Here's why…

  • They're evergreen - whether traditional or contemporary

  • They transcend demographies - kids, the young, the old... are all fans

  • They're about people - 'folk' is a just a warmer word for 'people'

  • They tell stories - about our culture and values

  • They document our history - that's much more enticing and entertaining than any history book!

  • They're easy to sing - you can almost 'talk' your way through them

  • They're easy to play - all you need is a couple of chords

  • They're not specific to any instrument - acoustic instruments were the instrument of choice for traditional folk but not necessarily so for contemporary folk where the electro-acoustic guitar enjoys centre stage (pun not intended:)

  • They're easy to write - they're narrations of popular opinions on social and political issues, set to traditional melodies

  • You don't need an audience - everyone's invited to join in!

  • They remind us of our roots - pun intended:)

  • They're relevant now more than ever - they transcend race, class and geographical boundaries, turning the planet into a folksy global village

  • They let you experience as well as express freedom - music of the people, by common folk, for everyone!

    Dear fellow Folkies, hi!

A team of professionals built the Titanic. But a solo amateur built the Ark. And amateur songwriters wrote and performed the first folk songs!

Welcome on board my 'Folksy Ark' and discover the magic of folk music in its various genres and sub genres. Let's raise a toast in celebration of folk songs, folk artists, folk instruments, folk festivals, folk music history and everything folk!

Folkies need no introductions but for the record, I'm an HR/CorpCom pro by day and an Indie singer-songwriter by night, addicted to gadgets and guitars. I believe that music per se is written for the ears and that notation, tabs, etc., are but means to an end. I also believe that music is a means of experiencing as well as expressing freedom. And most of all, I believe that folk songs are a celebration of this freedom because you are free to 'do-your-own-thing, any-which-way'!
